An American football match between the U.S. Military and Naval Academy in Philadelphia was reported on December 18, 1906 by the North China Daily News, the most influential English newspaper in China at that time. This was the earliest record about American football in China.

The team from Yancheng Huaimei School (now Yancheng Middle School) of Jiangsu province lost 6-31 to that of Shanghai American School in a contest held in Nanyang Mission College (now Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiaotong University) on December 8.

On October 18, 1930, the American football league kicked off in Shanghai with tickets priced at 1 dollar for a single game and 15 dollars for an entire season. The ticket for a Thanksgiving Day match in Shanghai was between 2 and 3 dollars in 1936.
It's worth noting that halftime musical performance was already a part of the Thanksgiving Day games in Shanghai in 1935.

In 1937 and 1938, football games were still held in Shanghai on Thanksgiving Day despite the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), but were suspended in the following years due to the war’s strong impact on social orders.
